GREAT AR RHAMAN
CONFERRED WITH JAPAN'S FUKOKU PRIZE 2016

  • Renowned Indian music composer AR Rahman was on 30 May 2016 awarded with the Japan's Fukuoka prize 2016 for his outstanding contribution towards creating, preserving and showcasing South Asian traditional fusion music.
     He will receive the award alongside Philippines’ historian Ameth R Ocampo and Pakistan's Yasmeen Lari.For the year 2015, noted Indian Historian Ramchandra Guha was conferred with Fukuoka Prize in academic category. 

  • About Fukuoka prize
  • The Fukuoka Prize is an award established by the city of Fukuoka and the Yokatopia Foundation to honour the outstanding work of individuals or organizations in preserving or creating Asian culture. There are three prize categories : Grand Prize, Academic Prize, and Arts & Culture Prize.Previous winners of Fukuoka Prize from India include sitar player Ravi Shankar, dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, historian Romila Thapar, sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and historian Ramachandra Guha.

  • He was also awarded with two Academy Awards (Best Original Score and Best Original Song) at the 81st Academy Awards.

  • HE WON GOOGLE COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD FROM ASIA:
  • Advay Ramesh, a Class 10 student from Chennai, on 19 July 2016 won the prestigious Google Community Impact Award from Asia, a theme based award part of Google Science Fair 2016.

    Ramesh bagged the award for creating a device that enhances fishermen's safety and productivity.

    Ramesh's FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT) hand-held terminal uses the Standard Position Services (SPS), an open service without encryption provided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, to enhance fishermen's safety and productivity at the sea.

    The 14-year-old Ramesh is also among 20 finalists shortlisted to compete for a 50000 US dollar scholarship from Google.

    The Google Community Impact Award recognizes a project that makes a practical difference in the innovator’s community by addressing an environmental, health or resources challenge.


    Google Science Fair:

    The Google Science Fair is an online science competition sponsored by Google, Lego, Virgin Galactic, National Geographic and Scientific American.

    • The first ever Google Science Fair was announced in January 2011.

    • The competition is open to 13- to 18-year-old students around the globe, who formulate a hypothesis, perform an experiment and present their results.

    • All students must have an internet connection and a free Google Account to participate, and the projects must be in English, German, Italian, Spanish or French.

    • In 2015, the Community Impact Award was won by Lalita Prasida.
